✔ The history of the beautiful medieval village of Montecatini Val di Cecina is linked to the Caporciano copper mine which remained active until 1907. The Etruscans were the first to exploit the abundant natural resources of this area. The mining complex, located about 1 km from the village, tells the story of men and their industriousness. One of the major industries of the twentieth century, Montedison s.p.a, which later became Montedison, took its name from this mining site. Today it is possible to visit parts of the nineteenth-century galleries (the network of galleries extends for about 35 km up to a depth of 315 m), the tower of Pozzo Alfredo (with the original freight elevator) and the church of S.Barbara, symbol of the devotion of the miners for their patroness. The museum complex in the mining area is the result of the will of the municipal administration of Montecatini Val di Cecina which, with the help of other institutions: the Mountain Community of the Alta Val di Cecina, the Province of Pisa, the Tuscany Region, and the European Union managed to recover the abandoned mining complex.
